The legal profession demands not only zealous advocacy but also respect for the courts and the judicial system. When attorneys cross ethical lines, disciplinary bodies step in to uphold the profession’s integrity. A recent high-profile example is Bruce Jacobs, a Miami foreclosure defense lawyer, who was permanently disbarred by the Florida Supreme Court in 2025 after years of escalating disciplinary issues. His case serves as a cautionary tale about how repeated misconduct, especially against the judiciary, can ultimately end a lawyer’s career.

The Florida Bar v. Jacobs, No. SC2023-0702 (Fla. May 6, 2025).
Matter of Jacobs, 2025 NY Slip Op 04563 (App. Div. 2d Department July 9, 2025).
The Florida Supreme Court has permanently disbarred Miami foreclosure defense attorney Bruce Jacobs, effective May 6, 2025, for repeated ethical violations and misconduct in foreclosure litigation.
The Court found that Jacobs engaged in frivolous filings, bad-faith tactics, and baseless attacks on judges, which disrupted proceedings and undermined confidence in the judiciary. Unlike a temporary suspension, this ruling is permanent, meaning Jacobs cannot reapply for admission to the Florida Bar.
This disbarment follows Jacobs’s 2023 suspension, where he served a 91-day rehabilitative suspension after violating Rule 4-8.2(a) by making reckless and unfounded accusations against judges, including calling them “traitors to the Constitution.” He was also ordered to pay $10,671.75 in costs at that time.
The disciplinary fallout has extended beyond Florida. On July 9, 2025, the New York Appellate Division, Second Department, imposed a six-month reciprocal suspension, effective August 8, 2025, with reinstatement eligibility no earlier than January 8, 2026.
Why It Matters
The Jacobs case underscores the limits of zealous advocacy. While attorneys must defend their clients, they are also bound to uphold professional integrity and respect the judiciary. Repeated violations, especially after prior sanctions, leave courts little choice but to impose the most severe discipline permanent disbarment.
Bruce Jacobs’s fall from a practicing foreclosure defense attorney to a permanently disbarred lawyer demonstrates how persistent ethical violations can bring an abrupt and irreversible end to a legal career. The Florida Supreme Court’s decision sends a clear message: attorneys who disregard professional conduct rules and attack the integrity of the courts will face the harshest sanctions available.
